Phuket airport is unusual. Although over 8 million people pass through it each year, the area around the international airport include some of the nicest, unspoilt beaches in Phuket and one of the few national parks. It is actually in one of the least developed part of Phuket island, and is around 35km to the more popular tourist areas of Patong, Karon and Kata beach, and even further to the southern areas of Cape Panwa and Chalong.
The vast majority of tourists arrive at Phuket airport and immediately jump in transport and drive an hour or more to the popular beaches. If however you don’t want to do that – you could do a lot worse by staying close to the airport. We spent a very pleasant few days at Nai Thon Beach on our last trip – and would probably do something similar again.
Closest Hotels to Phuket Airport
- Airport Mansions & Restaraunt
- Airport Overnight Hotel
Win the prize for being the physically closet hotels to Phuket International airport. They are not “airport hotels” in the traditional – walk out of arrivals and across to reception though. They are both around 1.5km from the airport itself, and frankly, unless you know the area or can read/talk Thai you will struggle to find the Amphur Thalang area they are in. Save yourself the grief and take a 5 minute taxi ride, or arrange a hotel transfer.
Although incredibly close to the airport – I think you will do better if you go a little further afield (I’m still talking under 10-15 minutes transfer time here) – and get to the actual beach.
Mai Khao Beach – 10-15 Minutes North of the Airport
Heading north Mai Khao is incredibly undeveloped – with only a couple of large and expensive resorts on the 11km of white sand beach, which also makes it Phuket’s longest beach. The beach is part of the Sirnat National Park. The closest resort to the airport is Centara Grand West Sands Villa and Resort. With a water park – its a good choice if you are travelling with kids and have the budget for it. The most luxurious hotel at Mai Khao is the 5-star plus pool-villa resort of Maikhao Dream Villa Resort and Spa. You are unlikely to find anything here for less than about 2000B / night.
Nai Yang Beach – 5-10 Minutes South of the Airport
Also part of Sirnat National Park – this beach is popular with the locals and home of the 5-star Indigo Pearl Resort. There is a better range of prices here compared to Mai Khao though. There is also a colourful local market if you need to do some last minute shopping. Cheaper options here include Phuket Nature Home Resort and Naithon Beach Mansion and Panpen Bungalows.
Nai Thon Beach – 10 -15 Minutes South of the Airport
The next beach south of Nai Yang is Nai Thon. Naithonburi Beach Resort is the most expensive option here but there are a several smaller places as well. Top tip – this hotel seems to pay for life-guards on the beach in front of them. The beach, as always in Thailand, are public so you swim with more safety that normal. There are a handful of restaurants on Nai Yang and maybe about 10 places to stay. This is very laid back spot for Thailand! Remember, as always, the cheapest guest houses won’t be found on the hotel booking sites.
