Its pretty unusual seeing women wearing head scarfs getting into a cable car. Its even more unusual to be doing it your self it shorts and sweating! The locals had their cardigans and jackets though – because at the top of the Langkawi cable car – its actually surprisingly cool – over 700m above sealevel its usually about 5C than the bottom! If you’ve ever been in a modern Swiss cable car – then the car is absolutely standard, they slow down, but don’t stop for loading, and carry around 6 passengers each. The odd thing is that you are catching it in a tropical island!
Langkawi is a beautiful island, with lovely beaches, but tends to be skipped over by Western tourists- most of the tourists here are local. The village at the bottom of the cable car is very clean and pristine, and feels a little “Disneyland meets the east”.
We used it as an interesting way to get to southern Thailand – taking a boat to Koh Lipe the next day.
