Lis’s Travel Round Up – April Edition

Every month (or so) I thought it would be fun to take a look at what struck my eye as the unusual, the interesting or the just plane weird in the world of travel.

In the Media

Hmm in the useless gadgets departments – the “me finder” for kids who get lost. What ever happened of having them memorise their phone number – oh yeah their parents don’t know their numbers either!

All National Parks in the US are free next week, thanks to National Parks week. Or you could come to New Zealand where all our National Parks are free all the time – regardless of whether you are a tax-payer, who pays for “free”, or a visitor.

The rush of Myanmar back into “normal” diplomatic relations continues with the EU close to dropping most sanctions. I really feel like if I don’t get to the country in the next year it will be change forever.

Talking of lost kids – what do you do when you are a solo parent and you mis-place your 12-year-old? In Bulgaria? Well you hope you’ve raised a smart a kid as Theodora has who writes about losing her child in Bulgaria

As someone who lives in a earthquake-prone country, and who has travelled to Thailand more than once,  I was very aware of the serious earthquake off Phuket and Sumatra on April 11th and the risk that there might be another tsunami. I read with interest this first hand account by Lauren who thought she was going to die.

On far more light hearted note, if you’ve ever travelled South America you’ll know that being in on a bus full of drug runners is not totally out of the question – or in this guest post on Nomadic Samuel Drug Bras!

  1. Thank you Lis for the mention 🙂

  2. As a parent, I hope I raise my child well enough to deal with the Theodora talked about.

Yup – I pity the many children who well never grow up to have that much independence or confidence, because their parents wouldn’t even let them go down to the shops alone!
