Nearcation from Wellington: Cape Palliser, Wairarpa – Plus Video

Martinborough Hotel, Wairarapa, New Zealand

If you are stuck in Wellington, New Zealand  but need a break for a day or longer than you can do a lot worse than heading over the Rimutakas to the the Wairarapa.  Only about 1.5hours out of Wellington, but separated by high hills, its a bit of a rural idyll. But not for the whole sheep thing that New Zealand is famous for: more its a rather nice combination of Pinot Noir, fine dining, good coffee, great fishing and fantastic landscapes. Setting out from Wellington – it will probably be on the cool side of tropical, in fact in summer, [...] Read more »

Wellington’s Zealandia – Is It Worth The Entry Fee?

Zealandia entry prices too high

Every six months or so Wellington city has taken to making all the city-owned tourist attraction free for a gold coin donation (NZ$1 or NZ$2).  I took the opportunity to see if Zealandia’s wopping NZ$28 (US$21, £13, €16) fee  for the combined entry into the visitor centre plus the wildlife sanctuary was worth it. As the whole funding of Zealandia is currently subject to fairly heated local debate, I thought I’d take the opportunity to see for myself. New Zealand’s Environmental Disaster Lets roll back a bit. New Zealand has/had a rather unique fauna and flora. New Zealand has been isolated [...] Read more »

New Zealand: Home of the World’s Only Gaudi Inspired Public Toilet

IMG_2857

Public toilets are important if you are travelling. Their location, quality, and price are all important considerations. But they aren’t often the main reason to stop in the town, nor does the town often build a tourist industry around said toilets. Unless the town is Kawakawa. And the toilets were designed and even partly constructued by  Hundertwasser,  - an expatriot Australian artist – who gave his adopted hometown a very valuable, and practical piece of art. The only place I’ve ever seen anything slightly similar is some of Gaudi’s work on show in buildings and parks in Barcelona, Spain. To [...] Read more »

Stay Safe in New Zealand’s National Parks

Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro from Mt Taranaki (Egmont)

Is New Zealand safe? A question asked by many. Well frankly, no its not, not if you intend to leave your brains at home.  Most overseas visitors come to New Zealand for the “great outdoors”, the “wilderness experience” or to part take in our famous “adventure tourism”. A lot of them visit one more National Parks. A few of them die, more have unpleasant experiences, which could have been avoided with a little knowledge, and a lot more application of the above-mentioned brains. Adventure tourism is not without its issues – but generally your chance of dying while bungy jumping, [...] Read more »

Wellington Street Art – Stainless Steel Braille Sculpture

Invisible City Wellington New Zealand

Wellington has quite a lot of sculpture around the streets. I’ll feature some of the more unusual ones over the coming weeks. This one is called “Invisible City“. It looks like it should say something in Braille – but it doesn’t – that’s art I guess! Actually its a useful place to meet people as its on the corner of Grey Street and Lambton Quay – but this part of the street has blocked off and there are a few benches to sit on. Its also very close to both useful places (several large banks and a computer store) and [...] Read more »

ANZAC Day in New Zealand

ANZAC Day, near Nelson

If you travel New Zealand, you will soon notice that we have some of the longest shopping hours of the civilized world. Most supermarkets are open 7 days,  in larger centers usually from about 6am to 2am.  Now it wasn’t always so, and you don’t have to be ancient to remember when everything shut down on a Saturday afternoon, there was one late night a week, and nothing was open on a Sunday i.e. much like Perth, Australia is these days! However if you are travelling in the country April you will come across 2.5 days where the whole places [...] Read more »

Hokianga Harbour Heads, New Zealand

Hokianga harbour heads, New Zealand

The Hokianga  is on of New Zealand’s largest harbours, which is not to say that there are any large towns on it. I snapped this picture on the outskirts of Opononi – which I won’t be surprised if you have to look up!  This picture shows the two taniwha (sea monsters) who guard the entrance according to local Maori legend.  The southern headland is an interesting short walk  on a well marked trail which gives spectacular views of the wild west coast of Northland. The northern head is made up of enormous sand dunes, and is on accessible by boat. The Hokianga [...] Read more »

Matai River at Nelson, New Zealand

IMG_3219

Taken on a beautiful sunny Easter Sunday in Nelson. The Matai River runs through the town of Nelson and there is an attractive and easy walking/cycling track that runs along most of its length. There are some pretty nice houses to have a look at along the route as well and we passed by the appropriately named Riverside Baths. This was taken at high tide though – the river is quite tidal at this point as its only about a kilometre or so to the sea. Read more »

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth Leaving Wellington Harbour

Queen Elizabeth cruiser liner Wellington, NZ

Wellington, New Zealand was founded for its fine port, and to this day is a busy one. Its not often that you see quite such a large cruise ship as the new Queen Elizabeth though! In fact the previous week we’d seen her sister ship the Queen Mary come through I took this shot from Breaker Bay on the south coast and just opposite the harbour mouth. I’ve never seen quite as many people on the road looking for a parking spot! Lucky for me I have a friend who owns a home with a roof terrace just in the [...] Read more »

Booking Cheap Australian And New Zealand Flights – Avoid the Consolidators

Wellington International Airport Departures

OK this may not win me much love from the advertisers – but here it goes. I have never yet got a cheaper flight from a consolidator than I have achieved just by booking directly with the airlines involved. It might be that I live in New Zealand – but generally I can do better or the same by booking direct. And I avoid the third party and their fees. I’m guessing too that its quite easy for those looking for flights to know exactly which airlines fly where! Within New Zealand your options are Air New Zealand or Jetstar. [...] Read more »
