Thailand Islands Compared: Koh Chang, Koh Samui, Phuket

Koh Chang White Sand Beach

After our exhausting 28 days in Burma – we relaxed on a Thai island. I am a huge fan of Thai beaches and this time we went to Koh Chang, not one that I’d been to before. Koh Chang (Trat) Location Koh Chang (Elephant Island, because of it’s shape) – is actually Thailand’s second largest island, after Phuket. The nearest town is Trat in eastern Thailand. The permanent population of 5,000 is vastly outnumbered by the tourists. How To Get There It’s about five to six hours from Bangkok to Koh Chang. There are mini-bus services, government buses, and taxis that [...] Read more »

Chaweng Beach Hotels and Accommodation

Chaweng Beach entrance, Beach Road, Koh Samui

I written before about Chaweng Beach – Koh Samui’s most famous beach before. And yes its a beautiful beach. Which is why the picture below may shock you. Its one of the main beach access points for Chaweng – and yes the Beach Road area, is an ugly mess. Power lines are strung everywhere, footpaths are uneven, inconsistent and often absent. The step up is large too – a huge inconvenience if you are not agile or are pushing a stroller. If you have rolling luggage you’ll be wanting a cab. Let’s face it, most of Thailand’s streets aren’t exactly [...] Read more »

Koh Samui’s Chaweng Beach Guide

Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui

Driving into Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui’s most famous beach, for the first time, I wasn’t, to be honest, that impressed. I’d been told over and over that Koh Samui was so much nicer than Phuket, which we’d just left, but to be honest I wasn’t that sure.  Koh Samui is basically a fairly circular island and there is one main road which circum-navigates it. The road is only rarely in sight of the beach. So you can drive all around Koh Samui – and miss seeing the beach! Strange but true – blame the explosive development of the island since [...] Read more »

Cheap Flights to Koh Samui: Do Cheap Samui Flights Exist?

flights-to-samui-samui-airport

So you are little frustrated about the prices you’ve found for flights to Ko Samui? I’m not surprised, the route has very little competition on it, and until recently the ONLY airline that flew the route was Bangkok Airways – who, not coincidentally,  own Ko Samui’s airport. Koh Samui Airport Although its not obvious to the casual visitor today, Samui is very late to the Thai tourist scene. As late as 1970 the island’s main crop was coconuts, and there were only limited boat services to it. Things have changed a little since then, but the Ko Samui Airport (airline [...] Read more »

Phuket or Koh Samui: Samui vs. Phuket – Which Is Better and Why

Kata Beach, Phuket

Planning a recent trip to Thailand – I was torn – should I go to the famous west coast resort island of Phuket or the more “laid-back” option of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. In the end we went to both, and here is my opinion on which of these famous Thai destinations you should go to. First off – I don’t actually think there is a huge difference between the two- both are very touristy, definitly not undiscovered and heavily catering to the package tourist European crowd. Which is all cool – but don’t arrive expecting to [...] Read more »

Phuket to Koh Samui: Travel Between the Two

Phuket City Bus Station

Phuket is a hub for cheap airlines who fly into Thailand – and many people’s trips to Thailand start in Phuket. On a recent trip we decided to see both “sides” of the south: Phuket on the Andaman Coast and Koh Samui on the Gulf of Thailand.  There are a number of options to get from one to the other – it comes down to time and money. How To Get from Phuket to Koh Samui Option 1: Flights from Phuket to Koh Samui Quick, easy and expensive – only one airline that flys the route – and they aren’t the [...] Read more »
