Thailand Islands Compared: Koh Chang, Koh Samui, Phuket

Koh Chang White Sand Beach

After our exhausting 28 days in Burma – we relaxed on a Thai island. I am a huge fan of Thai beaches and this time we went to Koh Chang, not one that I’d been to before. Koh Chang (Trat) Location Koh Chang (Elephant Island, because of it’s shape) – is actually Thailand’s second largest island, after Phuket. The nearest town is Trat in eastern Thailand. The permanent population of 5,000 is vastly outnumbered by the tourists. How To Get There It’s about five to six hours from Bangkok to Koh Chang. There are mini-bus services, government buses, and taxis that [...] Read more »

Weather in Phuket, Thailand

Patong Beach, August, Phuket

Let’s face it if you are planning a beach holiday in Phuket – the weather is pretty important. Most of us do not want to be dodging showers on the beach, or worse, tropical downpours! Phuket does have a wet and drier season, but its tropical – its never cold here.  And the wet season does not see the hurricanes or cyclones that cause mass destruction in other parts of the world. In fact the picture on this page – I took it at the height of the “wet” season, in August. For two weeks we had no rain at [...] Read more »

Hotels Near Phuket Airport – Phuket Airport Guest Houses

Nai Thorn Beach, near Phuket Airport

Phuket airport is unusual. Although over 8 million people pass through it each year, the area around the international airport  include some of the nicest, unspoilt beaches in Phuket and one of the few national parks.  It is actually in one of the least developed part of Phuket island, and is around 35km to the more popular tourist areas  of Patong, Karon and  Kata beach, and even further to the southern areas of Cape Panwa and Chalong. The vast majority of tourists arrive at Phuket airport and immediately jump in transport and drive an hour or more to the popular [...] Read more »

Phuket International Airport: Arrivals, Transfers, Departures – All You Need To Know

Phuket International Airport (code: HKT) is Thailand’s second busiest airport.  I was surprised at that fact because having flown through the airport a couple of times – its fairly small, and feels like a medium-sized domestic airport, rather than one that sees more than 8 million visitors who passed through in 2011.  It gets a bit crowded at times, its fair to say, particularly as the airport was originally designed for a capacity of only 6 million passengers. The airport is being expanded – but, as any of us who have transited an “under construction” airport, this only means that [...] Read more »

Where to Stay in Phuket?

Typical place to stay hotel Kata beach phuket

Choosing where to stay in Phuket is tricky, its a large island , with at least six very developed tourist beaches, and plenty of less well-known beaches to chose from. Alternatively you can stay inland in Phuket City or semi-rural areas such as Chalong. So there is no real one answer fits all answer to this question. Instead find your own answer by considering: what do you want from your trip to Thailand? Do you want to spend the entire time in an up-market resort or do you want to explore the local culture? is your vacation all about the [...] Read more »

Phuket, Kata Beach: Tips, Tricks and Highlights

Kata Beach, southern end, Phuket, Thailand

On our recent trip to Thailand we spent a few days staying in Kata Beach, one of Phuket’s famous beach resorts. One of the frustrating things about trying to research popular beach resorts in Thailand is all you will find is result after result written by the marketing department of a resort or tourist authority. This is not one of those – I stayed at Kata recently: and this is what I found. Phuket Kata Beach Tips The west coast beaches can get very rough in the wet season, tourists drown every season, dispite there being plenty of surf partrols on [...] Read more »

Cape Panwa, Phuket: Trip Report From Thailand

beach Cape Panwa, Phuket, Thailand

Now I just got back from a few days in Cape Panwa,  located  in southern Phuket. Its a little off the beaten track of the “big” Phuket tourist beaches of Patong, Kata and Karon, so I thought I might give you some details of our visit there. Cape Panwa is the southeastern corner of Phuket – which was what caught my eye – when I was planning a trip to Thailand and wondering where to stay in Phuket, I looked for somewhere a little different, but still with a good beach – Cape Panwa had the right characteristics. A beach, [...] Read more »

Phuket or Koh Samui: Samui vs. Phuket – Which Is Better and Why

Kata Beach, Phuket

Planning a recent trip to Thailand – I was torn – should I go to the famous west coast resort island of Phuket or the more “laid-back” option of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. In the end we went to both, and here is my opinion on which of these famous Thai destinations you should go to. First off – I don’t actually think there is a huge difference between the two- both are very touristy, definitly not undiscovered and heavily catering to the package tourist European crowd. Which is all cool – but don’t arrive expecting to [...] Read more »

Phuket to Koh Samui: Travel Between the Two

Phuket City Bus Station

Phuket is a hub for cheap airlines who fly into Thailand – and many people’s trips to Thailand start in Phuket. On a recent trip we decided to see both “sides” of the south: Phuket on the Andaman Coast and Koh Samui on the Gulf of Thailand.  There are a number of options to get from one to the other – it comes down to time and money. How To Get from Phuket to Koh Samui Option 1: Flights from Phuket to Koh Samui Quick, easy and expensive – only one airline that flys the route – and they aren’t the [...] Read more »
